On a regular basis, either in Google Sheets or Excel, I use formulas such as vlookup<span style=\"color: #000000;\">, index, <\/span>iferror<span style=\"color: #000000;\">, and the list goes on, to sort quickly through endless data. Not only are they fundamental <\/span>for<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> my survival as an SEO analyst, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But sometimes, these functions are just not good enough. They\u2019ll do the work, but the time it takes to set them up makes me question whether I am actually working faster.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Thanks to a recent outstanding presentation delivered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therobinlord.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robin Lord<\/a> during a digital marketing Meetup event at Brainlabs, I was introduced to <strong>the world of Regex<\/strong>. Regex is a matching expression tool returning specific values, for example, true or false, whether it finds the expression or not. It can be used on many platforms, such as Google Analytics, Python, Java, and more, to perform searches of specific strings.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You may be thinking \u201coh no, another complex programming language I don\u2019t understand that complicates things even more\u201d. And you could not be more wrong. The good news is that you can use Regex on Google Sheets to work with your data, making your life beyond easy. That\u2019s right, I\u2019m all about learning tools to make my life easier and lately Regex is my favourite.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The 3 main Regex formulas you can use on Google Sheets are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>REGEXEXTRACT<\/li>\n<li>REGEXREPLACE<\/li>\n<li>REGEXMATCH<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">They perform exactly what they say: <strong>extract, replace, and match<\/strong>. Since my purpose here is to demonstrate how helpful these functions are, I won\u2019t go too much in deep into all the Regex syntax rules. There are already plenty of comprehensive guides and resources out there so if you want to learn more Regex, here is a useful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regular-expressions.info\/tutorial.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Regex guide<\/a> and this is a really good <a href=\"https:\/\/regex101.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debugging tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Below I\u2019m going to dive right into Regex formulas for Google Sheets and examples on how to use them and what you can achieve with each one.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">REGEXEXTRACT<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This is the function you\u2019d want to use when you are digging out a certain string within a longer one. For one of my clients, I had a list of URLs and I had to extract certain words within each. For example, from the list of URLs below let\u2019s <strong>suppose I had to extract the location<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>https:\/\/www.regexisgreat.co.uk\/city\/in-london<\/li>\n<li>https:\/\/www.regexisgreat.co.uk\/location\/in-paris<\/li>\n<li>https:\/\/www.regexisgreat.co.uk\/cities\/in-dublin<\/li>\n<li>https:\/\/www.regexisgreat.co.uk\/europe\/in-amsterdam<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">However, I had many words I was looking for, and each URL could have included any of them and in a different location within the URL. Without Regexextract, I\u2019d have to apply multiple filters and custom formula for each URL, extracting the word based on its position. I don\u2019t have time for this and nor should you.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Let me get you started with a really simple Regex example. Let\u2019s say I needed to <strong>extract the word \u201cgreat\u201d<\/strong> from the link \u201chttp:\/\/regexisgreat.com\u201d. When you type in \u201c=REGEXEXTRACT\u201d in Google Sheets this is what the function requires:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7531\" src=\"https:\/\/brainlabdev.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexextract_img1.png\" alt=\"regexextract\" width=\"443\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexextract_img1.png 443w, https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexextract_img1-300x220.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The \u201ctext\u201d part is the cell where you have something to look for, and the \u201cregular_expression\u201d is the expression telling Regex what to look for. In our case, the formula would become:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>=REGEXEXTRACT(A3,\u201d.*(great).*\u201d)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7532\" src=\"https:\/\/brainlabdev.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexextract_img2.png\" alt=\"regexextract img 2\" width=\"537\" height=\"145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexextract_img2.png 537w, https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexextract_img2-300x81.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 537px) 100vw, 537px\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Here is a little syntax context: The<strong> .* before and after the word \u201cgreat\u201d tells Regex not to worry what precedes or follows the string<\/strong> \u201cgreat\u201d. So \u201cgreat\u201d could be anywhere in the URL, Regex will find it:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7533\" src=\"https:\/\/brainlabdev.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexextract_img3.png\" alt=\"regexextract img 3\" width=\"542\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexextract_img3.png 542w, https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexextract_img3-300x100.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7534\" src=\"https:\/\/brainlabdev.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexextract_img4.png\" alt=\"regexextract img4\" width=\"420\" height=\"114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexextract_img4.png 420w, https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexextract_img4-300x81.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This is a Regex example of what the formula would become if you are looking for multiple values:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>=REGEXEXTRACT(A3,\u201d.*(blue|green|red|purple|blonde).*\u201d)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Here you probably noticed the use of <strong>pipe \u201c|\u201d which stands for \u201cor\u201d<\/strong>. The formula tells Regex to look for the word blue or green or red and so on.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7535\" src=\"https:\/\/brainlabdev.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexextract_img5.png\" alt=\"regexextract img5\" width=\"389\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexextract_img5.png 389w, https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexextract_img5-300x156.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 389px) 100vw, 389px\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Again, it doesn\u2019t matter where the word is within the string. One additional thing to note is that Regex differentiates for capitalised letters, which can be quite handy sometimes.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The applications of this formula are infinite when you think that you can combine it with the functions you use every day. Even without combining REGEXEXTRACT with any other formulas, performing the task I show above without it would be quite time-consuming.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">REGEXREPLACE<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For one of my clients, I had a long list of title tags and I wanted to capitalise the first letter of each word except for words like \u201cthe\u201d \u201cin\u201d \u201cfor\u201d \u201ca\u201d, you get the point. With the formula PROPER you can capitalise each first letter of a word:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7536\" src=\"https:\/\/brainlabdev.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexreplace_img1.png\" alt=\"regexreplace img 1\" width=\"401\" height=\"128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexreplace_img1.png 401w, https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexreplace_img1-300x96.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.05em;\">But this didn\u2019t solve my problem. <\/span>Regexreplace<span style=\"font-size: 1.05em;\"> came to the rescue:<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>=regexreplace(proper(A4),&#8221;The&#8221;,&#8221;the&#8221;)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7537\" src=\"https:\/\/brainlabdev.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexreplace_img2.png\" alt=\"regexreplace img 2\" width=\"425\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexreplace_img2.png 425w, https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexreplace_img2-300x104.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Similarly to Regexextract, the \u201ctext\u201d part is the cell you want to modify, and the remaining part is a simple instruction telling Regex what to replace:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7538\" src=\"https:\/\/brainlabdev.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexreplace_img3.png\" alt=\"regexreplace img 3\" width=\"334\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexreplace_img3.png 334w, https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexreplace_img3-300x264.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 334px) 100vw, 334px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.05em;\">Here is an example of Regexreplace combined with itself:<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>=regexreplace(regexreplace(proper(A4),&#8221;The&#8221;,&#8221;the&#8221;),&#8221;In&#8221;,&#8221;in&#8221;)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7539\" src=\"https:\/\/brainlabdev.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexreplace_img4.png\" alt=\"regexreplace img4\" width=\"435\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexreplace_img4.png 435w, https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexreplace_img4-300x90.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 1.4em;\">REGEXMATCH<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Regexmatch searches for a value in a cell and returns a TRUE or FALSE. For me, this became useful when I was checking whether the URLs in my list contained certain words and I didn\u2019t want to go through endless filters.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Here is a simple Regexmatch example, looking for the word \u201cblue\u201d within a URL:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>=regexmatch(proper(A3),&#8221;.*blue.*&#8221;)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7540\" src=\"https:\/\/brainlabdev.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexmatch_img1.png\" alt=\"regexmatch img 1\" width=\"523\" height=\"115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexmatch_img1.png 523w, https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexmatch_img1-300x66.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 523px) 100vw, 523px\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Here is an example showing how Regex differentiates for capitalised letters:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>=regexmatch(proper(A3),&#8221;.*Blue.*&#8221;)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7541\" src=\"https:\/\/brainlabdev.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexmatch_img2.png\" alt=\" regexmatch img 2\" width=\"530\" height=\"118\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexmatch_img2.png 530w, https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexmatch_img2-300x67.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Again, here you can use multiple values to look for within the same formulas:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>=regexmatch(proper(A3),&#8221;.*Blue|blue.*&#8221;)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7542\" src=\"https:\/\/brainlabdev.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexmatch_img3.png\" alt=\"regexmatch img 3\" width=\"525\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexmatch_img3.png 525w, https:\/\/www.brainlabsdigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/regexmatch_img3-300x65.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The applications for Regexmatch are many and you can combine it with any other function on Google Sheets.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As you may have noticed, the potential of these three simple functions are endless. Let\u2019s not forget that there are more of syntax rules on Regex that you can use to achieve different things. Here is an additional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debuggex.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debugging tool<\/a> for those of you who want to get into coding with Regex.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Regex has made my life a lot easier and my data a lot more interesting to work with.
